Raising awareness of mental health in the workplace

As a responsible employer, we care about the wellness of our staff. HR Manager, Kim Lennon, is a certified Mental Health First Aider. She is part of a community of over 350,000 people in England and 2.6 million people worldwide trained to recognise mental ill health and help people find the support they need to stay well.

We raise awareness of mental health and reduce the stigma attached to it and are planning to run various wellness events across the firm. This helps to create an environment where attitudes and behaviour to mental health are normalised and everyone feels equipped with the skills to look after their own and others’ wellbeing.

Kim has shared with staff the ‘5 Ways to Wellbeing’ – five easy and effective ways to improve and look after your day-to-day sense of wellbeing and happiness in life.

ConnectBeing connected to others increases your psychological wellbeing so actively try to connect and interact with people around you. These social relationships are important parts of your life and building these relationships will support and strengthen you every day.

Be ActiveBeing active increases both psychological and physical wellbeing. Keep mind and body active; get outdoors, go for a walk or run, play a sport, dance, ride a bike, do some gardening. Doing something enjoyable and doing it regularly makes you feel good and helps clear your mind.

Keep LearningLearning new things promotes higher levels of emotional and psychological wellbeing. Try something new, rediscover an old interest, sign up for a new course, offer to take on a different responsibility at work, fix something, or learn to play an instrument or how to cook your favourite food. Set yourself a challenge you will enjoy working towards and achieving. Learning something new builds confidence and it’s fun!

Be AwareBeing aware increases psychological and emotional wellbeing. Taking notice of the world around you, of what you are feeling, of new sights, smells and sounds and consciously ‘being in the moment’ and focusing on the ‘here and now’ can help create a feeling of calmness and helps reduce stress.

Help OthersDo something nice! Thank someone, smile, volunteer your time, join a community group and look out as well as in. Seeing yourself and your happiness linked to the wider world can be incredibly rewarding and will promote connections with the people around you.
